Mary K. Oxley Nature Center
Association, Inc
Summary of Exhibits Project |
|
It
is an exciting time for our Nature Center! Work on the interior remodel
will begin soon, and thanks to help from the Oxley Foundation, the
classroom expansion will still be part of the project.
We are raising funds
for the new exhibits that will be installed in the Interpretive Building
as the remodeling work nears completion. We hope you will participate
by making a contribution. The Oxley Foundation will match all donations
for the project, so whatever you can give will be doubled through their
challenge grant.
Please review the
following description of the exhibits, and know that any amount you can
give will be greatly appreciated and will help make the exhibits become
a reality.

It
has been over twenty-five years since the Interpretive Building opened,
and many of the exhibits on display now were part of the original ones.
Several years ago, young parents who were bringing their children to
visit the Center were heard to say that the exhibits were the same as
when they visited as 4th and 5th graders back in the 1980’s.
We decided it was past time to update
and upgrade all the exhibits. Over the past two years, we have
been working with Taylor Studios, located in Rantoul, Illinois on the
design of the new exhibits.
The theme is “Shared Spaces & New Found
Places” and is designed to awaken our visitors’ sense of awareness to
the miracles of Nature that are all around us. It will put special
focus on the three main habitats found within the 800+ acres of the
Center: woodlands, wetlands and prairie. These will be depicted in
a floor to ceiling interactive mural that will be nearly 35 feet long.
 |
In addition, there will be
a “woodpecker tree” with sound domes that will project the calls of our
native woodpecker species and other creatures. It will
contain
a nest cavity that can be opened to see what the interior looks like.
A second exhibit room will contain
information and graphics on the ecoregions of Oklahoma with facts
about the birds, plants and animals found in each. This room will
also contain information on our local natural places, a discovery table
with moveable drawer units, and a looking and listening area where
visitors can see and hear the wildlife activity around the feeders and
water feature outside the large windows. |

The exhibits will also include an area
which will inform visitors on how to make their own yards and other
properties
into wildlife friendly habitats. An indoor beehive will be close
by so visitors can see at close hand the industrious activity of honey
bees.
 |
| There will also be a set
of rolling carts (one each for woodlands, wetlands and prairie) that
will be mobile dioramas with discovery drawers for young visitors to
explore. And our old tree cookie will also be updated! |
|
 |
Finally,
there will be an area that will be a tribute to Bob Jennings, the
original Naturalist/Director, who provided great vision and leadership
as the head of the Nature Center for twenty-five years. He retired
in September, 2002, and passed away in September, 2004, after a battle
with cancer. Under his talented guidance, Oxley Nature Center grew
from a dream on paper to an acclaimed facility with an award winning
staff. |
| To make these new exhibits
a reality, we are raising $350,000 for their construction and
installation. We hope that you will help make this effort a
success.
